THE Bulawayo residents are sitting on a health time bomb following the City council's failure to cope with garbage refuse collection and massive sewer pipe burst that have spread across different surbubs.

The local authority had embarked on subcontracting community trucks to assist in collection of garbage but however the efforts are in vain as most surbubs go for some weeks without garbage collection.

Speaking in an interview with BANO news, the Environmental Education and Publicity Officer of Enviromental Management Agency(EMA)-Bulawayo, Memory Kapumha highlighted that:

"The growing population coupled with ageing sewer infrastructure has resulted in continuous sewer pipe bursts."

"The sewer pipe system is now old dating back to when the system was initially installed in Bulawayo and factoring the population increase. This will take a lot of investment for the local authority to refurbish the pipework."

"We advise the community to report any dumping of waste  at illegal dump sites to EMA offices as this will help curb the level of pollution within the city," said Kapumha

Poor service delivery such as garbage collection has led to the resurgence of illegal dumping sites by residents most notable disturbing eyesaw sites are along roadsides, railway, bushy areas and abandoned buildings.

Pipe bursts are some of the surging cases around the city with most being sewages  which are visually seen flowing within the communities.
