President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed a new eleven-member board to steer the operations of the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), a move aimed at strengthening governance and accelerating the country’s digital transformation agenda.

The appointments, made in terms of the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe Act, were announced on Monday by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera during a press briefing at the Ministry’s headquarters in Harare.

Minister Mavetera said the new board brings together a diverse mix of expertise in telecommunications, governance, law, and finance, which will be crucial in guiding the regulator at a time when Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to expand digital connectivity and modernise its communication infrastructure.

She was accompanied at the announcement by Deputy Minister Dingumuzi Phuti and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Beulah Chirume.

Professor Sam Takavarasha Jnr has been appointed chairperson of the board, while Ms Barbara Mukahanana will serve as vice chairperson. Mr Prince Sibanda joins the board as the Ministry’s technical representative.

Other members appointed to the board are Ms Tofara Audrey Nyoni, Miss Michelle Madyira, Advocate Sebastian Masimba Guwuriro, Dr Siyakha Njabuliso Mthunzi, Dr Miriam Mugwati, Mr Caos Nzenze, Dr Maneta Linnys Dzauma and Dr Prince Mushaninga.

The new board is expected to provide strategic direction, oversight and governance to POTRAZ as the regulator works to enhance service delivery, improve network coverage and promote innovation within Zimbabwe’s rapidly evolving telecommunications sector.

Government has in recent years prioritised the expansion of broadband connectivity, the rollout of digital services and the development of a competitive communications industry to support economic growth and inclusion.

With the new board now in place, stakeholders expect POTRAZ to play a pivotal role in driving regulatory reforms and fostering a resilient digital ecosystem capable of supporting Zimbabwe’s ambitions of becoming a knowledge-based economy.
