The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide operation targeting vehicles moving on the country’s roads without registration number plates as well as those fitted with illegal sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons and other unauthorized gadgets.
In a statement released on March 10, police said the operation is aimed at restoring order on the roads and curbing criminal activities linked to unidentified vehicles.
According to the police, some motorists are deliberately removing number plates to evade identification after committing offences such as robberies, kidnappings and hit-and-run accidents. Authorities also noted that such vehicles are often involved in traffic violations including driving against the flow of traffic, ignoring red traffic lights and committing lane violations.
The operation will cover all categories of vehicles, including private cars, company vehicles, Government vehicles and public service vehicles. Police also raised concern that some public service vehicles have been removing their number plates to avoid follow-ups on traffic offences.
Authorities further warned against the use of illegal sirens, blue lights and bar lights, which are reserved for authorized emergency vehicles. The police said the misuse of such equipment causes confusion and disorder on the roads and can also affect the visibility of other motorists, especially at night.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police advised the public that all vehicles found operating without number plates will be impounded immediately. The vehicles will only be released once proper registration procedures have been completed and valid number plates installed.
Police also said any illegal sirens, blue lights or similar equipment found on vehicles during the operation will be removed on the spot. Motorists have been urged to comply with road regulations to avoid penalties.
