The Bulawayo arts community has plunged into mourning following the death of veteran actor Aleck Zulu, popularly known for his memorable role as Skoro in the television drama Amakorokoza.
Zulu’s passing was confirmed by celebrated director and actor Memory Kumbota in an emotional social media post that has since touched many across Zimbabwe’s creative sector.
The post reads:
“When uBhud’ Smart left to settle back home in Zambia after retirement he said to me, ‘I need you to look after my boy since you do the same work.’ I don’t know if I could have, should have, must have done better. Aleck is gone,” wrote Kumbota.
Kumbota revealed that he had spoken to Zulu only a day before his death. The two had been discussing rehearsals for a Passion Play involving young people from St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Bulawayo.
“Only yesterday we were chatting about his Passion Play rehearsal with youngsters of the St Patrick’s Roman Catholic. His last act was doing God’s work. Rest in peace mfanawami,” he said.
Zulu was widely respected in Bulawayo’s arts circles not only for his performances on stage and screen, but also for his dedication to nurturing young talent. Colleagues described him as a humble and passionate performer who remained committed to the growth of the arts long after achieving recognition.
His portrayal of Skoro in Amakorokoza earned him admiration from audiences and cemented his place among Bulawayo’s best-known actors. Beyond the screen, he was known for his willingness to mentor aspiring performers and share his experience with younger generations.
Funeral and memorial service arrangements had not yet been announced at the time of publication.
