Sobukhazi Eclipse Northlea To Win Inter-schools Athletics Competition

HISTORY making Sobukhazi High School unleashed a dominant display in the two day Reigate district schools athletics competition held at Whitecity stadium.


Popularly known for producing quality footballers and netballers   Sobukhazi High School surprised spectators by ending the continuous exchange in dominance of Northlea and Cowdray Park schools in athletics. 


It was the trail blazing form of the Sobukhazi athletes which left everyone with tongues wagging. Under 21 boys category Mzi Ncube was dominant in the sprints producing a handtime of 10.06 in the 100m and 48.01 in the 400m category while his teammates Methembe Tshuma, Basil Jele and Alpha Mpofu also played a pivotal role towards the success. 


Former Mzilikazi high student Basil Jele claimed a gold medal in the 400m hurdles, 110m hurdles and a bronze in the flat 400.


In the juniors category Mzilikazi and Northlea  exchanged victories with Ntombifuthi Nyarenda claiming the under 15 girls 100m race followed by her fellow teammate and Nkomo Moreblessing snatching the bronze. 


It was the U17 boys 400m race which left spectators surprised after race favourite Terence Ndlovu of Sobukhazi was dominated by two Mzilikazi athletes who claimed gold and silver respectively leaving their coaches Mr M. Mpofu and K. Ncube hysterically jovial, with jubilant expression of joy. 


In the Under 17 boys category the Mzilikazi High athletes dominated all the relays while in the u21 boys Sobukhazi athletes led by Mzi Ncube continued with their mouth watering display. 


Sobukhazi High School, winners of the 2024 Reigate District athletics claimed 54 medals, 29 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze while second placed Northlea High School tallied 66 medals trailing with 26 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze. 


Out of 12 schools Entumbane came 3rd with 45 medals, Mzilikazi 4th with 35 medals and newcomers could not go down without a fight Montgomery produced 10 medals, Methodist 7 medals whilst V Mhlophe had only 2 medals. 


Athletes who produced outstanding performances will represent reigate district for the Inter-district competitions scheduled for the last week of February whereby the Bulawayo province team will be selected to represent the province at the national competitions  to be held in Victoria Falls in March.
