Highlanders emerged victorious in a thrilling match against Chegutu Pirates, claiming the top spot in the league.

The clash, dubbed "the battle of black and white", took place at Barbourfields Stadium.

Highlanders dominated the first half but failed to find the breakthrough until the halftime whistle.

In the second half, Marvelous Chigumira's cross set up Brighton "MaNinja" Ncube, who scored an impressive header, leaving the Chegutu Pirates goalkeeper helpless.

As Highlanders continued to control the game, Ncube scored a stunning curling shot, securing his brace and proving his worthiness of wearing the renowned number 77 jersey, previously donned by club legend Ralph Matema.

The final blow came from Lynoth "Sonjy" Chikuhwa, who showcased his prowess by effortlessly switching flanks and finding the back of the net against debutants Chegutu Pirates.

Highlanders' head coach, Kelvin Kaindu, commended his team for their steady improvement and their focused approach to each match.

"Scoring three goals without conceding a single goal in the match shows that we are improving and our game was made a bit difficult in the first half because we were rushing too much into things and the halftime tactical change proved to be effective," said coach Kaindu.

Coach Kaindu also praised left-back Archford Faira, highlighting his attentiveness during training sessions.

"From the first day I saw Faira in training, I knew he had a lot of quality and the way he is playing I think he is now marketing  himself for a better league, he's now a national team player and he is applying everything that we are doing in training into the game," added the gaffer.

MaNinja's story aligns with the popular saying, "The stone that the builders rejected has become a cornerstone elsewhere."

The forward has seamlessly integrated into Highlanders FC, scoring in two consecutive games and bringing his tally to three goals in five matches. He is praised for his speed, energy, and relentless high-pressing.

Another standout performer is the versatile forward Lynoth "Sonjy" Chikuhwa, who has also netted three goals in five matches, surpassing his previous season's record.

In other matches, Manica Diamonds handed the game cocks their first defeat, providing relief for underfire coach Jairos Tapera. Newcomers Telone secured a narrow victory against Hwange, while Dynamos were held to a goalless draw by Bulawayo Chiefs at Rufaro Stadium.
