Broadcasting is a talent and cannot be studied: EZRA TSHISA

By MKHOKHELI ZIBENGWA, SENIOR EDITOR

PROMINENT and outspoken radio personality Ezra Tshisa Sibanda believes that broadcasting is a talent which cannot be studied.

Sibanda said this in an exclusive interview with Byo Arts News Online-BANO.

"My broadcasting journey started when l was doing my 'A' level where ZBC spotted my talent during public speaking. This is something which was in me and l believe broadcasting is a talent and cannot be studied," said Sibanda.

Sibanda said he is not discouraging anyone from studying journalism but to excell in the art one should have a passion for it, be talented and know what he or she desires.

"When it comes to radio and broadcasting it is not about the courses or school. l know in Zimbabwe because of the universities or because the courses are available, everyone jumps to do that course yet we know the industry here it's not good and you cannot be employed and they pay less.

"Other people do journalism not for passion but to say l'm just doing a course, which is not helpful. l'm not discouraging you from studying journalism," he said.

Sibanda added:

"lt's not everybody, it's like a footballer, you cannot teach Peter Ndlovu how to dribble a ball it is in him, you can't teach Messi how to play football it is in him so these things as well they go like the sports themselves.

"You have to have it in you, not everyone will excel in that field. So sometimes we choose wrong careers because there is an opening or there is a market for," said Sibanda.

The veteran broadcaster went on to list a number of broadcasters who made it in the media industry without any academic qualifications.

"Let me just give you a few people who excelled without even 'O' level qualifications. We had Tich Mutazi my brother, worked for Radio 3. He went to Botswana, he went to South Africa and became the biggest radio presenter without a degree.

"There was Alison Chavunduka (may her soul rest in peace) who had only 2 'O' Level qualifications and was taken by South African television broadcaster SABC. After that she was taken to Atlanta in United States of America for CNN as an anchor with nothing, no degree or anything.

"That's why I am trying to tell people that broadcasting has to be in you, you have to have the talent," said Sibanda.
