In a notable case highlighting the issues surrounding wildlife protection, Sithemiso Budziriakwa, 58, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court on charges of contravening the Wildlife Act.

The incident under scrutiny took place on August 21, 2024, when Budziriakwa allegedly presented a live tortoise from Chabwino Farm in Goromonzi to the workplace as a peculiar means to demand unpaid wages.

Upon realizing the seriousness of the accusation, the court was informed that the tortoise was brought to the Human Resources Manager's office as a form of protest. Budziriakwa reportedly used the tortoise to draw attention to owed salaries, a choice of action that sparked considerable concern regarding the treatment of wildlife.

In a decisive ruling, the court emphasized the importance of adhering to wildlife protection laws to prevent abuses and exploitation. Budziriakwa was found guilty and subsequently sentenced to pay a fine of USD 300 or serve a three-month prison term.

This case draws attention to the intersection of labor disputes and environmental law, reminding the public of the need for responsible interaction with wildlife and the importance of addressing employee grievances through appropriate channels.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe continues to advocate for the protection of wildlife and encourage lawful conduct in all sectors.
