BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE-The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) has issued a press statement addressing growing concerns regarding copyright infringement and defamation caused by unregistered media practitioners. This statement reflects the organization's commitment to enhancing media accountability and protecting the integrity of journalism in Zimbabwe.
In recent times, instances of unregulated and unethical practices by unregistered media outlets have escalated, prompting worries about transparency within the industry. The VMCZ emphasizes the importance of adherence to journalistic ethics and standards, highlighting the detrimental effects that such practices can have on public trust in the media.
To tackle these issues, the VMCZ plans to actively engage with stakeholders in the media landscape. The organization aims to foster a culture of accountability and professionalism among media practitioners by encouraging registration and compliance with established regulations.
Mr. Bibian Chikoko, Chairperson of the VMCZ Complaints Committee, emphasized the need for careful oversight and the importance of verifying the credibility of media sources. “It is essential for consumers of news to know who is behind the information they receive,” said Chikoko. "We must work together to promote ethical journalism and eliminate fraudulent media practices."
The VMCZ's commitment to addressing these concerns reflects its broader mission to empower genuine media practitioners and uphold the values of responsible journalism. The organization urges the public to be vigilant when consuming media and to report any suspicious behavior from unregistered media practitioners.
As part of its ongoing efforts, the VMCZ aims to establish clearer guidelines for media operation in the country and foster collaboration between licensed journalists and regulatory bodies. By strengthening these standards, the VMCZ hopes to restore faith in the media sector and provide a safe space for legitimate journalism to thrive.
The VMCZ calls upon all stakeholders to support its initiative and contribute to creating a more accountable and trustworthy media environment in Zimbabwe.
