The Zimbabwe archery team seized the spotlight at the Region 5 tournament in Walvis Bay, Namibia, from August 22nd to 24th, with a performance that commanded attention.
The team, comprised of 32 talented archers divided into National and Development teams, held their own against top archers from Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia.
The Development team stole the show, securing an impressive third-place finish in the 3D (animal targets) category and nabbing silver medals in the Bullseye event. Jonathan Howard stood out with exceptional skill, earning bronze medals in both events and clinching the overall bronze with his cumulative performance.
The National team also demonstrated impressive skill, capturing bronze in the 3D category. Andrew Manning shone with a 9th place finish in Africa, solidifying his position as an up-and-coming star in the sport.
Under the guidance of expert coaches Rob Jackson, Simon Allot, Michael Philp, and Ray Funani, as well as support from dedicated teachers and families, the Zimbabwean archers showed remarkable potential for future success.
The experience has fueled their ambition, with plans to retain many of the team members for next year and to inspire greater participation in the sport across the nation.
Zimbabwe has set its sights on hosting the 2026 Region 5 championships, with an official bid expected by November 2024. Botswana is also in the running to host, ensuring a competitive selection process.
