In a bid to keep Zimbabwe's youth occupied, happy, and busy, Simunye Simunye Arts, led by Director Allen T Mahwehwe, has launched the Dlala2k Dance Battles - a dance competition that brings together young dancers from across the country.
The first edition of the event was held yesterday at Mzilikazi Youth Centre, with the second edition scheduled for October, in a date yet to be announced.
Speaking to BANO NEWS, Allen T Mahwehwe explained that the Dlala2k Dance Battles aim to provide a platform for young dancers to showcase their talents, while keeping them away from the streets and substance abuse.
"90% of youth aged 15 to 24 love music and dance, so we introduced the battles at schools and youth centers where drugs and alcohol are prohibited," he said.
The initiative is driven by a passion to see Bulawayo dancers dance for a reason, with the ultimate goal of taking the battles to a top-class event. To make the event inclusive, dancers of any genre or style were welcome to participate, with a small fee of $3 required to cover costs such as poster printing.
The first edition of the event was a resounding success, with Locala-based piano artist DASHMAN delivering an outstanding performance. Judging from the numbers, it's clear that the dance community is thrilled to have such an opportunity.
However, raising cash for the winners' prize was a significant challenge, as the organization lacks sponsors or individual backers. Despite this, Allen remains optimistic, hoping to attract larger audiences, participants, and a more substantial winning prize in future editions. He also plans to expand the program to include Rap Battles, Dancehall Battles, and Poem Slams.
The events are open to the community, who are encouraged to support as participants or audience members. Allen emphasized the importance of preaching about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, and the need for responsible behavior at the events.
As the Dlala2k Dance Battles movement gains momentum, it's clear that Simunye Simunye Arts is dedicated to empowering Zimbabwe's youth through dance and music.
