BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE- The Mthwakazi kaMzilikazi Cultural Association (MMCA) is gearing up to host the KING MZILIKAZI COMMEMORATIONS 2024, a significant cultural event that aims to unite the Mzilikazi kingdom and its diverse cultures and ethnicities.

This year's commemorations will take place on September 7th, and promise to be a memorable occasion for Matabeleland residents.

The day's events will kick off with an annual march from Matshobana to City Hall, starting at 7 AM and concluding at 9 AM. This symbolic march serves as a fitting way to honor the legacy of the late king. The main event ceremony will be held at Mhlahlandlela, the king's last known capital, located along Old Gwanda Road.

Under the theme "Siqoqa Isizwe nagamasiko aso," which highlights the importance of culture in nation-building, the MMCA seeks to remind the people of Bulawayo of their rich heritage and history.

The commemoration of King Mzilikazi Day is particularly significant, as it marks the anniversary of the king's passing on September 5, 1865, and is observed on the first Saturday following this date.

This year, the MMCA has set its sights on increasing youth attendance and reducing drug abuse among young people. The association aims to correct the historical narrative and educate the youth on aspects of their heritage that may not be taught in schools.

Mr. Sipho Gama, the chairman of the association, has extended a special invitation to schools to attend and learn about the history of the Ndebele kingdom, which is reflected in the names of many schools in Bulawayo.

The day's program will feature a range of activities, including traditional dances, songs, and cooking demonstrations. Buses will transport attendees from City Hall to Matobo eMhlahlandlela, where they will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the kingdom. Mr. Gama has emphasized the importance of traditional attire and conservative clothing on the day, as well as the need for timely arrival and departure.

The MMCA has stressed that the event is strictly cultural and apolitical, with the sole purpose of celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Ndebele kingdom. Chiefs from the Matebeleland region have also been invited to attend and lead the people in traditional practices, showcasing how events were commemorated in the past.

In conclusion, Mr. Gama urged the people of Bulawayo to attend the event in large numbers, saying, "Our history is too colorful to be destroyed, and therefore people should attend and take this opportunity to learn."
