MIDLANDS PROVINCE - The Insukamini Irrigation Scheme in Ward 19 has brought new hope to 126 farmers in the area, providing a sustainable source of income and food security.
Located 27 kilometers from Gweru City, the scheme has been hailed as a model for agricultural development in Zimbabwe. The Acting Chief Director ARDAS, Mr. Leonard Munamati, recently toured the scheme to witness the ongoing farming activities and encouraged farmers to adopt the block system starting this coming summer season.
"The block system will aid in synchronizing operations and increasing productivity," said Munamati in his keynote address.
"We are confident that it will lead to even greater success for our farmers."
The Insukamini Irrigation Scheme, which was established on 41.3 hectares of land, utilizes flood irrigation, harnessing the natural gravitational force from the nearby Insukamini Dam. The farmers have been allocated plots of 0.5 hectares (42 farmers) and 0.2 hectares (84 farmers), promoting equitable land distribution and ensuring that each farmer has a fair chance to succeed.
The scheme has transformed the lives of the farmers, providing them with a reliable source of income and food security. It has also demonstrated the potential for rural communities to thrive through irrigation and collective farming.
As Zimbabwe seeks to revive its agricultural sector, the Insukamini Irrigation Scheme serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through innovative agricultural practices and collective effort.
