Zimbabwe has taken center stage at the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) Forum on Food Security and the Sustainable Development Goals, showcasing its successes in tackling climate change and advancing agricultural development.
Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Honourable Vangelis Haritatos, highlighted the country's achievements in climate-proofing agriculture, irrigation development, and region-specific crop cultivation, also known as agroecological tailoring.
The Deputy Minister was enthusiastic about Zimbabwe's progress, stating, "It has been a very successful event. We've shared a lot of Zimbabwe stories with regards to our successes. For me, when we compare ourselves to the other LLDCs, it seems like we are very, very advanced."
He attributed the country's success to programs such as the Presidential Input Program and Pfumvudza/Intwasa, which have enabled Zimbabwe to stay ahead of the game in terms of climate change resilience.
The Deputy Minister noted that climate change was a major topic of discussion at the forum, with experts from the United Nations and the Minister of Agriculture from Uzbekistan sharing their experiences on climate-proofing. However, he was confident that Zimbabwe's efforts had put the country in a leadership position.
"We are definitely ahead of the game," he asserted.
The LLDCs Forum on Food Security and the Sustainable Development Goals brought together experts and policymakers from landlocked countries around the world to share experiences and best practices on addressing food security and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Zimbabwe's participation in the forum is a testament to the country's commitment to addressing climate change and advancing agricultural development, and its success in doing so is a model for other countries to follow.
