Nkulumane MP Calls for Statues Honoring King Lobengula and Queen Lozikeyi to Promote National Unity

By MKHOKHELI ZIBENGWA

Honorable Desire Moyo, the Member of Parliament for Nkulumane Constituency, delivered a passionate speech in Parliament urging for broader national representation in the country’s monuments.

During his address, he praised the government's effort to honor historical figures such as Mbuya Nehanda and Sekuru Kaguvi with statues, a move that reflects Zimbabwe’s commitment to preserving its rich history.

However, Hon. Moyo emphasized the need for inclusivity in the selection of national heroes to be commemorated. He called for the erection of statues honoring King Lobengula and Queen Lozikeyi, two pivotal figures in the history of Matabeleland, to ensure that all regions and communities feel represented in the country’s national narrative.

“In the spirit of leaving no one and no place behind, it is important for us, as a nation, to recognize that these are not the only icons of our country,” Moyo said. He added that celebrating the legacy of leaders from other regions, like Matabeleland, would promote equality and unity among all citizens.

The call aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader push for national inclusivity and reflects the MP’s commitment to ensuring that the contributions of all regions are recognized and celebrated. Moyo’s proposal was met with enthusiasm in Parliament, signaling a potential shift toward greater regional representation in national monuments.

The recognition of King Lobengula and Queen Lozikeyi, alongside already established figures, would enhance Zimbabwe's historical landscape and strengthen the spirit of national unity, Moyo argued. The MP concluded his speech by reiterating the importance of inclusivity in fostering a sense of national pride among all Zimbabweans.
