Harare, November 18, 2024 – The United States continues to attract a growing number of Zimbabwean students seeking higher education opportunities, with the latest data showing a 6.6% increase in enrollment from the previous academic year.
According to the 2024 Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education, 1,907 Zimbabwean students are currently pursuing higher education in the U.S. for the 2023-24 academic year.
The United States ranks among the top three destination countries for Zimbabweans studying abroad, alongside South Africa and the United Kingdom. Of the Zimbabwean students in the U.S., 49% are undergraduates, 32% are graduate students, 18% are engaged in Optional Practical Training (OPT), and 1% are enrolled in non-degree programs.
Graduate students have shown the highest increase, with a notable 15% rise in enrollment compared to the previous year. This trend underscores the strong educational ties between Zimbabwe and the United States and reflects the growing interest of Zimbabwean students in exploring global higher education opportunities.
Scholarship opportunities play a significant role in facilitating access for Zimbabwean students. Academic, athletic, and creative scholarships provide pathways for many, while the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe, through its EducationUSA program, continues to support students with resources and guidance. The program has been instrumental over the past 25 years, with advisors stationed in Harare, Gweru, Mutare, and Bulawayo helping students identify the best academic fit.
Additionally, the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds initiative offers financial assistance to high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds, covering application and travel costs. Over the past year, more than 100 Zimbabweans have benefited from fully funded academic or professional exchange programs offered by the U.S. Embassy.
The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education are celebrating the 25th annual International Education Week from November 18-22, 2024. This joint initiative highlights the U.S. commitment to fostering international education and student mobility, which are pivotal to diplomacy, innovation, and economic growth.
