BULAWAYO– The late former Vice President of Zimbabwe, Cde Phelekezela Mphoko, has been posthumously conferred with the prestigious status of National Hero, recognizing his immense contributions to the liberation struggle and the development of the nation.
In a statement issued by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on behalf of ZANU PF, the Government, and the people of Zimbabwe, the President expressed heartfelt condolences to the Mphoko family.
The statement highlighted the invaluable role Cde Mphoko played in the fight for Zimbabwe’s independence and his dedication to the country’s progress after 1980.
“As they go through the motions of grief, may they derive solace from the knowledge that we mourn and stand with them in this darkest hour,” President Mnangagwa stated, acknowledging the Mphoko family’s loss while underscoring the nation’s gratitude for Cde Mphoko’s selfless service.
The ZANU PF Politburo unanimously resolved to immortalize Cde Mphoko’s legacy by bestowing upon him the National Hero status. This honor reflects his unwavering commitment to the liberation struggle and his efforts in shaping Zimbabwe’s post-independence trajectory.
President Mnangagwa described Cde Mphoko as a visionary leader whose contributions were rooted in sacrifice and dedication to the ideals of freedom, unity, and development.
“In recognition of his meritorious role of service to his country, both before and after Independence, the ZANU PF Politburo has agreed to celebrate and immortalize his life of sacrifice,” the statement reads.
The conferment of National Hero status ensures that Cde Mphoko’s legacy will remain an enduring part of Zimbabwe’s history. His contributions to the nation’s independence and progress will serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come.
The burial arrangements for the late National Hero will be announced in due course.
