The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has moved decisively to uphold the standards of officiating in the Premier League by suspending three referees following an in-depth review by the ZIFA Referees Committee.
Referee Lawrence Zimondi has been suspended for four weeks, spanning Matchday 11 to Matchday 14, due to subpar performance in two high-profile matches: Highlanders versus CAPS United at Barbourfields Stadium on 13 April 2025, and Ngezi Platinum against Yadah at Baobab Stadium on 30 April 2025.
Similarly, Nelson Meke has been handed a four-week suspension covering the same Matchdays, following unsatisfactory officiating during the Scotland versus Herentals fixture held at Rufaro Stadium on 1 May 2025.
In a sterner move, referee Tichaona Mbire faces a six-week suspension from Matchday 11 through Matchday 16, reflecting the committee’s heightened concern over his recent performance standards.
These sanctions underscore ZIFA’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of Zimbabwean football by ensuring that referees meet the highest officiating benchmarks. The association has reiterated its resolve to conduct continuous assessments and training to improve the quality of match officiating across all levels of the league.
Fans and stakeholders are hopeful that these disciplinary measures will serve as a catalyst for enhanced referee performance, fostering fair play and credibility within the Zimbabwe Premier League.
