Ngozi Mine Dump Site: A Ticking Time Bomb Requiring Urgent Attention

By MKHOKHELI ZIBENGWA

The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. A.T. Mavunga, has sounded the alarm on the dire situation at Ngozi Mine, a dumpsite on the outskirts of Bulawayo that has evolved into an informal settlement.

Hon. Mavunga described the situation as having "gone out of hand" and emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to improve waste management and mitigate environmental impacts.

After touring the dump site, Hon. Mavunga expressed concern over the recurring fires that have become a public health crisis and environmental hazard. The fires have severely impacted the health and well-being of residents in nearby suburbs, such as Cowdray Park, with community members reporting respiratory issues.

The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of finding solutions that take into account the hundreds of men, women, and children who rely on the dumpsite for survival by collecting recyclable materials. He called for informed, inclusive, and practical solutions to curb the recurring outbreaks of fires.

Hon. Mavunga urged government and council officials to work together to transform this challenge into an opportunity for innovation, sustainability, and improved living.

"Let's work together to address these challenges and ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for our communities," he said.

The government has committed to working closely with local authorities and stakeholders to find sustainable solutions and support initiatives that improve waste management and mitigate environmental impacts. The aim is to create a better future for the residents of Bulawayo and surrounding areas.
