Zimbabwe’s arts community has been plunged into mourning following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of three members of the Sekusile Sitshikitsha traditional dance group.

The group was returning from a stellar performance at the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival in Mutare when tragedy struck.

The accident occurred on Saturday, 20 July 2025, along the Gweru–Bulawayo highway. The ensemble, representing Matabeleland South Province, had just showcased their rich Sitshikitsha dance heritage at the Mutare Agricultural Show Grounds. The performers, most of whom are employees at How Mine in Mzingwane District, were on their way home when their vehicle was involved in a devastating collision.

The lives of Ms S. Mpofu, Ms I.T. Mike, and Mr L. Mazara were sadly lost in the crash. Several other members of the group sustained injuries of varying severity and are currently receiving medical care outside hospital facilities.

In a heartfelt joint statement, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association (ZNTDA) and Delta Beverages extended their condolences to the bereaved families and called the incident a monumental loss to Zimbabwe’s cultural sector.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. These were not just dancers; they were carriers of tradition and national pride. Their deaths leave an irreplaceable void in our artistic community,” the statement read.

The Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival one of the country’s flagship platforms for traditional performing arts—had just concluded its Matabeleland South provincial performances when the tragedy occurred. Sekusile had been among the standout groups at the event, showcasing vibrant dance, costume and storytelling reflective of Zimbabwe’s cultural tapestry.

The three organising partners say they are working closely with the affected families and are committed to supporting them through this difficult time. They also pledged to provide updates on the condition of the injured and ensure that the contributions of the deceased are remembered with the honour they deserve.

Messages of sympathy and tributes from across Zimbabwe’s arts sector continue to pour in. Fellow dancers and cultural organisations described the fallen as “heroes of heritage,” whose rhythm and spirit will never be forgotten.
