The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has joined the global community in honouring the courageous men and women who dedicate their lives to safeguarding wildlife, through a powerful statement released yesterday to mark World Ranger Day.
Observed annually on 31 July, the day recognises the critical role rangers play in protecting natural heritage, often under extremely challenging and dangerous conditions. ZimParks used the occasion to commend Zimbabwean rangers for their tireless efforts in patrolling protected areas, combatting poaching, working with communities, and educating the public.
“This year’s theme, 'Rangers, Powering Transformative Conservation’, highlights the role of rangers not just as protectors of wildlife, but also as agents of change shaping the future of conservation,” ZimParks said in its statement.
The Authority also remembered rangers who have lost their lives or gone missing in the line of duty, noting that their sacrifices continue to inspire ongoing conservation work across the country.
ZimParks acknowledged the difficult conditions rangers endure including harsh weather, limited resources, and extended periods in the bush and praised their strength, resilience, and commitment to conservation.
“By investing in our rangers, we are investing in the future of conservation in Zimbabwe,” the Authority said, reiterating its commitment to supporting ranger welfare and enhancing capacity within the sector.
“As we mark this important day, we say thank you to all our rangers. Your courage, passion, and commitment inspire us every day. You are the backbone of conservation, and we stand with you.”
World Ranger Day is recognised globally to celebrate the work of rangers and to honour those who have fallen in the line of duty.
