The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a suspected case of food poisoning that claimed the lives of two children and left 14 other people hospitalised after attending a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava, Masvingo, on 27 October 2025.
According to a police statement released on Tuesday, the victims — seven adults and seven children — reportedly ate sadza and drank mahewu during the traditional ritual before suddenly falling ill. The two deceased minors were aged three and seven.
“Four children and seven adults are currently in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic,” said Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi
Police said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the poisoning, and more information will be released in due course.
