Zimbabwe has boosted its installed power generation capacity to 3,100 megawatts (MW), up from 2,920 MW, as more Independent Power Producers (IPPs) join the national grid, Energy and Power Development Minister Hon. July Moyo has revealed.
Speaking on the progress of the country’s energy sector, Minister Moyo highlighted that the growth in capacity demonstrates Zimbabwe’s commitment to expanding power supply and reducing reliance on imports. The inclusion of IPPs, he said, is critical in bridging the energy gap and ensuring sustainable electricity generation for both domestic and industrial needs.
“The continued engagement of Independent Power Producers is transforming our energy landscape, enabling us to generate more power locally and meet the growing demand,” Hon. Moyo said.
Zimbabwe’s power sector has faced challenges in recent years, including aging infrastructure and recurring load-shedding. However, the entry of IPPs and the expansion of generation capacity signal a positive shift toward energy security and industrial growth.
Analysts note that with a generation capacity of 3,100 MW, Zimbabwe is better positioned to support economic growth, particularly in mining, agriculture, and manufacturing, while also enhancing energy access for households across the country.
As the government continues to encourage private sector participation in the energy sector, further capacity increases are expected, bringing Zimbabwe closer to achieving a stable and reliable power supply for all.
