The Zimbabwe Council of Copyrights (ZICCO) today held its 2025 Annual General Meeting at the Family of God Auditorium in Bulawayo, where a new Board was elected, with legendary musician Chase Skuza emerging as one of the standout additions to the council’s leadership.
Artists who attended the AGM welcomed Skuza’s election, saying his decades of experience and deep understanding of the music industry will strengthen ZICCO’s efforts to protect creatives and improve their welfare.
The newly elected Board will be led by gospel musician Thabiso Moyo, frontman of Madewa and Abantwana BeNsindiso YamaNazareth. Moyo takes over from Tendayi Chiraya, who has served as Board Chair for the past two years.
In his address, ZICCO CEO Dr. Tafadzwa Masembura outlined the organisation’s progress over the past year. He highlighted the Nyabira Sugar Beans Project, an initiative designed to create long-term economic support for artists who may no longer be able to perform due to age or health challenges.
Dr. Masembura also updated members on the ongoing ZICCO Road Show, a national campaign aimed at educating communities about copyright issues and artists’ rights. He noted that the campaign could not be completed this year because of court matters the organisation has been handling, but assured artists that it remains a priority.
The CEO urged musicians not to hesitate to approach ZICCO during times of distress, including illness, hospitalisation or bereavement, emphasising that the organisation exists to support its members.
“No artist should struggle in silence. Our doors are open for anyone who needs assistance,” he said.
The AGM concluded with the disbursement of royalties, bringing relief to many artists who attended. Representatives from the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, Office of the Chief Registrar, were also present.
