The City of Bulawayo on Friday, 28 November 2025 officially opened its festive season calendar with the annual Carols by Candlelight event, a cherished tradition that brought together families, schoolchildren, community leaders and charity partners for a night of music, reflection and giving.

The evening was illuminated by performances from pupils drawn from various schools across the city, who led the crowd in singing uplifting Christmas carols that set a joyous and spirited tone. The Salvation Army Brass Band added a rich musical layer to the celebrations, while children from King George VI Children’s Centre delighted attendees with lively dance showcases.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of His Worship, Senator David Coltart, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu highlighted the historical significance of the event, noting that Carols by Candlelight has been part of Bulawayo’s cultural fabric for nearly 70 years.

He said the long-standing partnership between the City of Bulawayo and the Rotary Club of Bulawayo continues to give the event a deeper meaning, as it also serves as a platform to mobilise donations for the underprivileged.

“Through this event, we seek to ensure that every member of our community, especially the less privileged, experiences a cheerful and dignified Christmas,” said Senator Coltart in the address.

He added that the occasion provides an opportunity for the city to reflect on the year drawing to a close and to look ahead with renewed plans and aspirations for the coming years.

The Mayor further urged residents to embrace the holiday spirit responsibly, prioritising safety, care and community unity as the festive season unfolds.

This year’s Carols by Candlelight once again reaffirmed Bulawayo’s enduring commitment to tradition, compassion and togetherness.
