Businessman Wicknell Chivhayo has revealed that former Warriors captain Benjamin Mwaruwari is willing to take up the Highlanders FC head coach position, should the club express interest and his contractual needs be guaranteed.

Chivhayo shared the update after hosting Mwaruwari and fellow football legend Harlington Shereni at his home for breakfast, describing the meeting as one of the most memorable moments of his life. During their discussion, Mwaruwari reflected on his long and successful football journey, from his early rise in Zimbabwe to major European leagues where he featured for teams such as AJ Auxerre, Portsmouth, Manchester City, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, before concluding his career in South Africa.

Their conversation later turned to Highlanders’ recent decision to part ways with coach Pieter de Jongh. Chivhayo said this development prompted him to ask Mwaruwari whether he would consider leading the club. According to Chivhayo, Mwaruwari expressed interest after making a few consultations, confirming that he would be open to the role if his contract would be fully secured.

Chivhayo said he was humbled by the condition and formally submitted the proposal to Highlanders leadership through his curator. He explained that, outside of his previously pledged one million dollar sponsorship package for the club, he is prepared to personally take responsibility for Mwaruwari’s salary, benefits and transport, including providing him with a new car of his choice for the duration of his contract. He added that these additional commitments would only apply if Mwaruwari is the club’s choice for head coach, although the main sponsorship package remains available regardless of the final decision.

Chivhayo stated that Mwaruwari represents the blend of experience, local understanding and international exposure that Highlanders needs at this critical moment. He argued that previous attempts to rely on foreign coaches have not produced the desired results and reiterated the importance of empowering local talent, echoing the national philosophy that development should be led by citizens.

The businessman said his proposal is also part of his philanthropic work and honours the legacy of the late national leader John Landa Nkomo, a passionate Highlanders supporter. He expressed confidence that, with Mwaruwari at the helm, Highlanders could regain its competitive edge in the 2026 Premier League season.

Chivhayo concluded his message with the club’s rallying call, declaring that victory and revival are within reach.
