General Emmanuel Matatu Formally Appointed Commander of Zimbabwe Defence Forces

 Today, His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, officially presided over the ceremony at State House to formally confer the role of Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces on General Emmanuel Matatu.

Although General Matatu’s promotion to the rank of General and appointment as Commander took effect on 21 November 2025, today’s ceremony marked the official assumption of his duties in a historic event attended by senior military officials and dignitaries.

President Mnangagwa, acting in terms of section 216(2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with sections 7(1) and 8(2) of the Defence Act [Chapter 11:02], promoted Lieutenant General Matatu to the rank of General and officially appointed him as Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

Addressing General Matatu during the ceremony, President Mnangagwa said:

"It is my distinct honour to extend this congratulatory message to you, our Commander of the ZDF. Your appointment to this apex position in our country's military establishment attests to the confidence I have in your vast experience and professionalism as a career soldier and decorated veteran of the liberation struggle. This loyalty, patriotism, honour and integrity you have always demonstrated must continue as you uphold the sacred oath to protect the Constitution and wholeheartedly serve our motherland Zimbabwe."

The ceremony formally recognised General Matatu’s leadership role and his responsibility to guide and oversee the strategic operations of the nation’s defence forces, reinforcing professionalism and commitment within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
