Police in Bulawayo have confirmed a tragic sudden death case involving a three-year-old girl from Cowdray Park, who drowned after falling into a water-filled toilet pit.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on 28 November 2025 at around 6PM. The minor, identified as Keila Nkomo, was playing near a neighbour’s toilet with her friend, a nine-year-old girl from the same suburb. Keila reportedly slipped and fell into the pit, which is approximately 2.5 metres deep and half filled with water.
Her friend immediately rushed to inform Keila’s aunt, a 22-year-old woman who was at home at the time. The aunt ran to the scene, managed to retrieve the child from the pit, and attempted to administer first aid. Unfortunately, it was already too late.
The body of the deceased was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) mortuary for postmortem.
Police have appealed to parents and guardians to exercise constant supervision over children, especially in environments with potential hazards such as water bodies or deep pits. Authorities also reminded members of the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers and streams during the rainy season, urging patience until water levels subside to prevent further loss of life.
