The Bulawayo Catholic community has been plunged into mourning following the death of celebrated soloist, tenor singer and choir master, Thembalethu Ncube, a key member of the Gregorian Choral Choir.
Ncube, who had been admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital, passed away on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy admired across local Catholic music circles.
The Bulawayo Catholic Youth Ministry confirmed the tragic news in an emotional announcement on social media, describing Ncube as a pillar of the choir and a gifted vocalist whose influence shaped the ensemble’s distinctive sound.
According to the statement, Ncube’s radiant voice, passion for Gregorian chant and dedication to sacred music inspired countless singers and worshippers. His colleagues remembered him as the guiding force behind the choir’s harmonies and a cherished friend whose presence brought warmth, discipline and spiritual depth to every performance.
“Thembalethu was the radiant voice that lifted our harmonies and the guiding hand that shaped our music,” the choir wrote. “His unwavering commitment will forever echo in the sacred walls where we gather.”
The Gregorian Choir extended heartfelt condolences to Ncube’s family, friends and all who were touched by his life and music. They also appealed for prayers and privacy for those mourning his loss.
As tributes continue to pour in from church members, fellow musicians and admirers, many have described Ncube’s death as a significant loss to Bulawayo’s liturgical music community. His legacy, they say, will continue to resonate in every chant and hymn the choir performs.
Ncube’s funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
