A 54-year-old woman from NkowaNkowa has been arrested for allegedly operating what authorities describe as an illegal “private prison” from her home. The incident came to light after reports surfaced that she had detained dozens of people on her property on December 2, 2025.
According to police, the woman — who owns a local tavern — took it upon herself to lock up men who she believed posed a danger to the community. Her actions reportedly targeted patrons who became violent after drinking, as well as individuals who failed to settle their bills at the tavern.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a total of 36 people were being held at her residence. Officials say many of the detainees were kept there for allegedly drinking without paying, while others had been locked up for assaulting women during alcohol-fueled altercations.
Authorities expressed concern over the scale of the operation and the conditions under which the individuals were detained. Police spokespersons noted that regardless of the woman’s intentions, taking the law into one’s own hands constituted a serious offence.
“This is a highly unusual case,” an official stated. “We are looking into how long these detentions have been happening, the circumstances involved, and whether any additional people or establishments are connected to similar practices.”
The arrest has sparked broader discussions about safety issues in local taverns and the measures some business owners take to protect themselves or their patrons. Investigators have confirmed that the woman will face charges related to unlawful detention.
Officials say the inquiry is ongoing as they work to ensure no similar incidents occur in the community.
