Zimbabwe’s music fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of legendary sungura icon Nicholas Zakaria, the revered Khiama Boys frontman whose influence shaped generations of artists.

The Zakaria family confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement, describing him as a “beloved pillar of the community” whose music and mentorship transformed the country’s artistic landscape. To fans across the nation, Zakaria was more than a musician — he was a cultural giant, affectionately known as Madzibaba and celebrated widely as the “Senior Lecturer” for the countless artists he mentored.

Among his greatest protégés is Alick Macheso, now one of Zimbabwe’s most acclaimed performers, who often credited Zakaria for refining his craft and instilling discipline both on and off the stage.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Zakaria, the talented musician and beloved member of our community,” the family said.

“Nicholas left an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft. His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones.”

Zakaria’s influence stretched far beyond the studio. For decades, he was a constant presence at community events, church gatherings, and national celebrations, always carrying himself with humility despite his towering stature in the industry. His death marks the end of an era for sungura — a genre he helped define and elevate.

Across social media, fans, musicians, and cultural leaders continue to pour out tributes, describing him as a mentor, father figure, and visionary whose melodies became the soundtrack of everyday Zimbabwean life.

Details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course as the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its greatest musical architects.
