In a move that has sent Zimbabwe buzzing with shock, laughter, and a fair amount of side-eyes, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has officially opened the door for inmates to enjoy conjugal visits, and just in time for the holidays.
Yes, you read that right. Prisoners at Marondera Female Open Prison and Connemara Prison are now allowed private time with their partners, a bombshell announcement that has instantly turned the nation into a gossip factory.
According to ZPCS, the festive-season “love sessions” are part of a bold new shift towards rehabilitation. Officials say the visits are meant to keep families bonded and help inmates stay emotionally grounded. But on the streets and online, Zimbabweans have already renamed the programme: “Bedroom Bail.”
And it gets even juicier.
Selected inmates will also be released temporarily to join their families for Unity Day — with strict orders to return after New Year. A holiday pass… with romance included? Only in 2025.
ZPCS Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu spilled the details while addressing inmates, revealing that the service is finalising a national parole system that will allow some prisoners to complete their sentences from home.
“We are in the process of implementing the parole system,” he said, adding that inmates who have shown good behaviour stand a chance of returning to their communities earlier than expected.
Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi didn’t hold back either, stressing that families must play their part.
“Their families and communities must also play a vital role,” she said. “Meaningful relationships help with reintegration.”
Inside the prisons, the mood is said to be “festive,” with some inmates reportedly celebrating the chance to reconnect with partners after months — or years — apart.
Outside the prisons? Reactions range from laughter to outrage, with some calling it “progress,” others calling it “madness,” and many simply saying: “Only Zim can do this!”
As Zimbabwe pushes ahead with modernising its correctional system, one thing is clear — love is officially no longer on lockdown.
