Zimbabwean endurance walker Prince Ncube, popularly known as Dr Gasolo, is set to join American long-distance walker Eddie Bond on a section of his historic walkathon from Cape Town, South Africa, to Cairo, Egypt.
Dr Gasolo will walk alongside Bond on a 100-kilometre stretch from Plumtree to Bulawayo, adding a Zimbabwean presence to the continental journey that has drawn attention across Africa and on social media.
Confirming the development on his Facebook page, Bond highlighted the harsh conditions he has faced while trekking through Zimbabwe.
“Aloha from Zimbabwe! It’s been raining every day for about a week. Neither my shoes nor socks can stay dry, no matter how hard I try! Tomorrow I’ll be joined by a special guest who will walk with me 100km to Bulawayo,” wrote Bond.
Dr Gasolo is widely known for his annual walkathon, the Dr Gasolo Long Walk To Success, which usually takes place every year in August. Through the initiative, he walks from Gwanda Matshetsheni, his rural home, to Bulawayo.
The aim of Dr Gasolo’s walk is to amplify artists’ voices and advocate for better living and working conditions for creatives, using endurance walking as a form of activism and public engagement.
His participation in Bond’s walk is expected to inspire local communities along the Plumtree–Bulawayo route, while reinforcing the message of unity, resilience and advocacy through physical endurance.
Bond’s walkathon will continue northwards after Bulawayo as he steadily advances toward Cairo, completing one of the most ambitious long-distance walking challenges on the African continent.
