A 25-year-old Beitbridge woman has appeared before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court facing allegations of ill-treating her six-year-old daughter in violation of the Children’s Act.
Miriam Mhlanga appeared before Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba, with Tawanda Chigavazira representing the State.
According to court papers, the incident allegedly occurred on 11 February 2026 at a house in the Busy Curve area of Beitbridge. The State alleges that Mhlanga, who is the lawful guardian of Tryness Joseph (6), unlawfully ill-treated the minor.
It is alleged that Mhlanga assaulted the child by striking her several times with a whip all over the body. The court heard that she also allegedly placed the child’s left hand, including her palm and fingers, on a burning stove.
The accused is facing charges of contravening Section 7(1) as read with Section 7(5) of the Children’s Act [Chapter 5:06], which relates to the ill-treatment of a child.
The matter was brought before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court under summary jurisdiction. Further proceedings in the case are expected as the court determines the way forward.
The accused has not yet been asked to plead, and investigations are ongoing.
More details will be provided as the case unfolds.
