The City of Bulawayo has taken delivery of a fleet of new heavy-duty machinery and tractors aimed at strengthening the city’s road maintenance and construction efforts.
In a statement, Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart confirmed that the local authority received a variety of Caterpillar machinery and New Holland tractors for its Works Department.
“Yesterday we took delivery of a variety of new Caterpillar machinery and New Holland tractors for our Works Department. These have been bought by the City of Bulawayo using money supplied to us by Zinara,” said Mayor Coltart.
The equipment was acquired using funds disbursed by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), which supports local authorities in road rehabilitation and maintenance through allocated road user fees.
Mayor Coltart expressed optimism that the investment in top-of-the-range equipment would significantly improve the city’s capacity to address deteriorating road infrastructure.
“I am delighted that we have bought top of the range equipment which will add massive capacity to our road maintenance and construction teams,” he said.
Bulawayo, like many urban centres in Zimbabwe, has been grappling with worsening road conditions caused by ageing infrastructure, heavy traffic and limited funding over the years. The latest acquisition is expected to accelerate rehabilitation works and improve service delivery across the city.
The mayor acknowledged that while serious challenges remain in restoring the city’s roads to acceptable standards, the arrival of the new machinery marks a critical step forward.
“We have serious challenges as we rehabilitate Bulawayo’s roads but this is a step in the right direction,” he added.
Residents have long called for urgent intervention on pothole-ridden roads, with the council now hopeful that the new equipment will translate into visible improvements in the coming months.
