The Nkulumane community in Bulawayo came together in large numbers to bid farewell to Mzobanzi “Mzoe” Khumalo, a man widely remembered for his kindness, humility and strong presence in the suburb.
Khumalo, who was born on 10 August 1987, passed away on 28 February 2026. He was laid to rest at Luveve Cemetery, where his mother was buried two years ago.
Hundreds of mourners from across Bulawayo and surrounding areas attended his burial, a turnout many residents said reflected the deep respect and affection people had for him. Friends, neighbours and colleagues described him as a humble man who always made time for others and was known for helping people in his community.
One community member described Khumalo as a person who left a lasting mark on the lives of those around him.
“Mzoe was a remarkable young man who left an incredible mark on his community. He was a beacon of kindness and helped countless people with his gentle nature. The crowds and people from all walks of life who came to pay their respects show the impact he had. He was like a pillar in the area, almost like a Member of Parliament in the hearts of the people,” the resident said.
Another close associate said the loss felt deeply personal to many who knew him.
“At the body viewing it felt like he would wake up. The fridge had not changed him. The people who came showed what type of a man he was. I lost a brother, a friend and an advisor. Hardly a week passed without us meeting,” he said.
Many who attended the funeral said Khumalo had left behind a powerful lesson about how people should treat one another.
“The man was remarkable. He has left us with a challenge to live life in the most humanly manner possible. Mzo inspired us to love and to be kind to one another so that when the inevitable comes, people will remember us the way they remembered him,” said another mourner.
Khumalo’s burial mass was held at Holy Spirit Parish Catholic Church in Nkulumane 12 and was attended by Ward 23 Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, who described the late Khumalo as a respectful and hardworking member of the community.
“He was a person who respected others and never caused havoc in the place he lived. He worked for his family and lived peacefully with those around him,” said the councillor, who also thanked residents for turning out in large numbers.
Local service providers also assisted in organising the funeral arrangements. Pochen Events Management & Creative Minds, together with Bafana Bafana Bus Tours, provided catering and transport services during the send-off, serving more than 1,000 mourners.
In a message of condolence, the companies thanked the Khumalo family, the Nkulumane community, friends and neighbours for their cooperation during the funeral.
“We thank God for allowing us to assist in offering catering and transport services for the send-off of Mzobanzi Jahalamajaha Khumalo. Despite serving more than 1,000 people, we tried our best. We thank the family and the community for the support shown during this difficult time. May his soul rest in power,” the message read.
Residents said Khumalo will be remembered not only for his work and friendships, but for the spirit of kindness and unity he inspired among people in Nkulumane and beyond.
