Zimbabwe's Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, has sounded the alarm over the potential threat of "social media imperialism" to the country's national security.
Speaking yesterday the Zimbabwe National Defence University, Dr. Muswere highlighted the need for viable and sustainable information management systems to counterbalance the influence of social media platforms, which he accused of spreading misinformation and destabilizing the country.
The minister emphasized the importance of redefining national security in the face of evolving information systems, which are threatening peace and security in Zimbabwe. He noted that the use of artificial intelligence, algorithms, and voice cloning is affecting media development, digital security, and data sovereignty.
Dr. Muswere warned that the country's national security is at risk due to its reliance on foreign-owned social media platforms, which could be used to spread fake news and manipulate public opinion. He called for the development of home-grown solutions to regulate these platforms and protect the country's digital sovereignty.
The minister also emphasized the need for a comprehensive hybrid media strategy that takes into account online platforms and the evolution of information management systems. He warned that the mismanagement of information systems can lead to economic instability and loss of confidence in the government.
