As Zimbabwe’s election dates draw closer, politicians are making their intentions known through campaigns, with many emphasizing transparency and community transformation.
Aspiring Nkulumane constituency candidate, freedom poet and director Desire “Moyoxide” Moyo, says he entered politics to be the voice of the people, promising to use his platform in Parliament to champion citizens’ concerns.
“I am an MP for everyone, born, bred, educated, and nurtured in Nkulumane—from its challenging past to its present-day opportunities. It takes determination and vigilance to tackle socio-political challenges and translate community needs into solid political action. I have been using creative advocacy tools to champion people’s dreams and hopes for a long time, and now I will use my real voice in Parliament to ensure citizens’ concerns are addressed, laws are pro-people, and national progress is monitored,” Moyo said in an exclusive interview with BANO NEWS.
Desire Moyo is contesting the Nkulumane parliamentary seat under the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), led by Advocate Nelson Chamisa. He is among 12 opposition candidates who were barred from contesting this year’s polls, reportedly for submitting their nomination papers after the 4 p.m. deadline.
When asked how he differs from past CCC representatives who failed to fulfill their electoral promises, Moyo was emphatic:
“The word ‘failure’ does not exist in the CCC vocabulary. I have taken over the baton from Hon. Kucaca Ivumile Phulu to accelerate progress and deliver results for everyone. I do not work in reverse; instead, I aim to build on the positive foundations already laid and advance development in Nkulumane. We all contribute in diverse ways and hope for the best,” he said.
Moyo is competing against several candidates, including Freedom Murechu of the ruling ZANU-PF, Andrew Ndlovu of ZAPU, Adelaide Mhlanga from Freezim Congress, and Nompilo Bhebhe of the Zimbabwe African National Congress (ZANC).
Highlighting the role of youth in national development, Moyo expressed concern over the country’s high youth unemployment rate, describing it as a “national disaster.” He emphasized that solutions should empower young people with skills and opportunities rather than temporary handouts.
“We need a paradigm shift to transform the attitudes and lives of Nkulumane’s youth. This requires youth-driven and youth-focused development projects. I will facilitate open platforms that allow constant engagement among youth, development experts, stakeholders, and business leaders,” Moyo said.
He further outlined plans to create meaningful youth engagement structures, including an Administrative Plan to involve young people in decision-making and a Participatory Development Plan with youth at its center.
“As a youthful leader at heart, I am committed to strategically positioning our young people to address the pressing issues of idleness and unemployment,” Moyo concluded.
