The city of Bulawayo is set to reclaim its spot on the national and international sports calendar with the revival of the Bulawayo Half Marathon, scheduled to take place on April 19, 2025, at the iconic White City Stadium.
This prestigious road race, which was last held in 2005, was once a major attraction in the Southern region, drawing top athletes from Kenya and beyond. The event was previously sponsored by Coca-Cola and supported by various local businesses, including Holiday Inn, Ingwebu, and Bulawayo Rainbow.
The revival of the Bulawayo Half Marathon is a significant milestone for the city, which has been working tirelessly to restore its reputation as a hub for sports and athletics. The event is expected to attract a large field of local and international athletes, as well as spectators from across the region.
The 21-kilometer route will take runners through some of Bulawayo's most scenic western suburbs, including Mpopoma, Tshabalala, Nkulumane, Kelvin, Magwegwe, Lobhengula, Luveve, Njube, and Mabuthweni.
The event's revival is also aligned with the National Development Strategy Goal 3 (NDSG 3), which emphasizes the importance of promoting health and wellness for all. The event's organizers are calling on the community to rally behind the event and support its success.
"We appeal to everyone in Bulawayo and beyond to contribute to the success of this event," said Themba Mhlophe, the event's coordinator. "No amount is too small, and we encourage individuals and businesses to donate in cash or kind."
The total event budget is $20,000, and contributions can be made at various drop-off points, including Sportszone, BAB offices, and BRT offices. Those outside the country can use money transfer facilities like Mukuru, Western Union, and others.
The Bulawayo Half Marathon is a historic event that has the potential to put Bulawayo back on the map as a major sporting destination. With the support of the community, this event is poised to be a resounding success.
