Six years ago, on January 23, 2019, the world lost a musical icon, Oliver Mtukudzi. Today, we take a moment to reflect on his incredible life, his contributions to music, and the lasting impact he had on the world.

Born and raised in Highfield, Harare, Mtukudzi's musical journey began in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels, a band that also featured Thomas Mapfumo and James Chimombe. With the support of Paul Tangi Mhova Mkondo, the group was given the opportunity to perform at Club Mutanga, one of the few venues available to black musicians during the era of segregation.

Mtukudzi's unique voice, style, and energy quickly made him a household name in Zimbabwe and beyond. He went on to release numerous albums, collaborate with international artists, and tour the world, entertaining audiences with his distinctive "Tuku Music."

Throughout his career, Mtukudzi was a true ambassador for Zimbabwean music, showcasing the country's rich cultural heritage to the world. He was a member of the KoreKore group and sang in Shona, Ndebele, and English, incorporating elements of different musical traditions into his work.

Mtukudzi's legacy extends far beyond his music. He was a devoted family man, father to six children, and grandfather to three. His children, including the late Sam Mtukudzi and Selmor Mtukudzi, have followed in his footsteps, pursuing careers in music and the arts.

As we remember Oliver Mtukudzi today, we celebrate his life, his music, and the indelible mark he left on the world. His legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians, artists, and fans, ensuring that his music and spirit will live on forever.
