Bulawayo’s illustrious Imbube ensemble, Amaqaqa, is preparing to captivate the world stage with their much-anticipated musical spectacle, “Singing Like Birds.” With this monumental concert, the group is not merely performing—they are embarking on a cultural renaissance aimed at globalizing the timeless Isicathamiya genre.
In an exclusive interview with Mohau Ncube, the group’s articulate spokesperson, it became unmistakably clear that Amaqaqa is on a visionary mission to transcend borders through the universal language of music.
“We are fusing diverse sounds from multiple languages in a way that resonates with our cherished audiences worldwide,Music transcends barriers, and we believe it is imperative to elevate and export our Imbube traditions to the global stage,” Ncube stated.
This landmark concert is designed to reinvigorate and modernize traditional Isicathamiya, breathing new life into the genre for contemporary listeners. Amaqaqa is introducing a repertoire rich with sonic innovation, incorporating dynamic rhythm shifts, multilingual lyrics, and distinctive vocal techniques—particularly their signature sound clicks, which have been refined for musical fluency.

Among the luminaries gracing the stage is Zinjaziyamluma, an iconic name in Zimbabwe’s Maskandi scene, whose presence promises to amplify the concert’s musical gravitas. Adding further cultural depth, Chief Dakamela will attend as the distinguished guest speaker, bringing with him ancestral wisdom and ceremonial significance.
