Hon. Desire Moyo, affectionately known in the arts as Moyoxide, is a celebrated Zimbabwean theatre practitioner, protest poet, director, and cultural activist whose artistic journey spans more than three decades. From his humble beginnings in Nkayi to the international stage, Moyo has consistently used performance as a tool for truth-telling, healing, and community transformation.
His stage career began in 1990 at Malinga Primary School, Nkayi, with the production Ipi Ntombi, and by 1992 at Amavene Primary School in Bulawayo, his passion for performance was already evident. In 1999, he co-founded Missing Piece Performing Arts with fellow creative Madlela Sikhobokhobo. Together they produced powerful works such as Calabash, SCARS, This Other Place, My Father My Husband, and the award-winning Iphupho My Dream! (1999).
In 2008, Missing Piece evolved into Victory Siyanqoba Trust, a civic society organization that merged arts with community development, good governance, and creative advocacy. Under this banner, Moyo directed thought-provoking productions including House of Joshua, Our Bones, and the critically acclaimed and award-winning Bhalagwe is Burning — a courageous exploration of Gukurahundi’s painful history.
The 2010s cemented his reputation as both an artistic director and a fearless protest poet, with performances that traversed Zimbabwe and other African countries. Notable stage works of this era include Spirits at War (2017), Rachel (19) (2018), and Talitha Koum – Someone Lied (2019).
Through Moyoxide Ideations, his creative enterprise, he has continued to pioneer bold and experimental projects, including the forthcoming tragedy Bhalagwe is Turning (2024–25). He also serves as the Founder & Artistic Director of Eziko Theatre Laboratory, a dynamic space for nurturing new voices, concepts, and performances under annual themes such as Re-Birth (2025) and From Concepts to Masterpiece (Umnyaka wobuciko).
A former top student at Manama High School and graduate of Hillside Teachers College, Moyo taught for six years before fully dedicating himself to the arts and politics. Today, he serves as a Member of Parliament for Nkulumane Constituency, seamlessly blending his dual callings of art and public service.
Currently, he is completing his ninth poetry album, iDabane, and preparing a performance of his signature piece Lizards & Crocodiles in the style of South African protest poet Mzwakhe Mbuli.
Hon. Desire Moyo’s artistry has always been anchored in resilience, truth, and service. His work dares to confront silences, spark dialogue, and inspire communities to “Make Nkulumane Proud Again” — a vision that extends beyond politics into the beating heart of Zimbabwean culture.
